Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026  ·  Effective: April 2026

Choose Brave (BRAVE — The Alex & Jon Project) is committed to protecting the privacy of everyone who interacts with our website, programs, and tools — particularly families and young people. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights in relation to it.

Short version: We collect only what we need, use it only to support our mission, never sell it, and always give you control over it. If you have questions, email [email protected].

1. Who We Are

Choose Brave is a nonprofit charity operating under the name BRAVE — The Alex & Jon Project. We are based in Charleston, South Carolina. Our website is choosebrave.org and our Brave Check-In tool is hosted at the-brave-check-in.netlify.app.

For privacy-related questions, contact us at: [email protected]

2. Information We Collect

Information you give us directly

  • Email address and name — when you sign up for our mailing list, RSVP to an event, reserve a spot on Get Connected Program, or contact us
  • Contact form responses — the content of messages you send through our contact form or via email
  • Program registration details — name, email, and any information provided when joining a BRAVE program

Information from the Brave Check-In

The Brave Check-In is a self-assessment tool. When you complete it:

  • Your answers are used to calculate your result level (Green, Amber, or Red) in your browser only
  • If you choose to enter your email at the end, it is collected for the purpose of sending your result and relevant resources
  • Check-In answers themselves are not transmitted to our servers unless you explicitly provide your email
  • No account is created. No identifying information is stored without your consent.

Information collected automatically

  • Standard web server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited, time of visit) — used for security and site performance only
  • We do not currently use tracking cookies, advertising pixels, or third-party analytics beyond basic hosting logs

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To send you resources, program information, or your Check-In result (only if you have opted in)
  • To confirm your place on a BRAVE program or event
  • To respond to your inquiries
  • To send our newsletter and updates (only if you have opted in, and with the ability to unsubscribe at any time)
  • To improve our website and tools

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any automated decision-making.

4. Health-Related Information

The Brave Check-In asks questions related to the emotional and mental wellbeing of your child. We treat this information with the highest level of care:

  • Answers are processed in your browser and are not stored or transmitted unless you explicitly provide an email address
  • We do not share individual Check-In responses with any third party under any circumstances
  • Aggregated, anonymised data (e.g. “X% of respondents were at Green level”) may be used for reporting and impact measurement
Important: The Brave Check-In is not a clinical assessment. Results are not a diagnosis and are not stored as medical records. BRAVE is an educational program and does not provide therapy, counselling, or clinical care.

5. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. We may share information with:

  • Service providers — hosting platforms (Netlify), email platforms, and other tools used to operate our services. These providers are bound by data processing agreements and may not use your data for their own purposes.
  • Legal requirements — if required by law or to protect the safety of a person.

6. Data Retention

  • Mailing list data is retained until you unsubscribe
  • Program registration data is retained for 2 years after the program ends
  • Contact inquiries are retained for 1 year
  • Server logs are retained for 90 days

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate information
  • Ask us to delete your information
  • Withdraw consent for email communications at any time (every email includes an unsubscribe link)
  • Object to how we use your data

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Cookies

Our website uses only technically necessary cookies to function (e.g. session management). We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels. You can disable cookies in your browser settings without affecting your ability to use the site.

9. Children’s Privacy

Our website and tools are designed for parents and caregivers, not for use directly by children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will delete it promptly. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately.

10. External Links

Our site may contain links to external websites (e.g. 988 Lifeline, Family Connection of SC). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to review their policies.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be available at choosebrave.org/privacy with the date of last update. Significant changes will be communicated to mailing list subscribers.
